Excelsior, comic fans! Falls Church comic shop Victory Comics is opening a new location in Springfield.
The new location is opening at 6681 H Backlick Road in the Backlick Center shopping center.
Opened in February 2010 by owner Jeff Weaver, the Falls Church location has Warhammer, Magic the Gathering and other tabletop gaming supplies as well as a robust comics collection, from new releases to long boxes filled with back issues.
Staff at the store said the Falls Church shop at 586 South Washington Street isn’t going anywhere and the Springfield branch will be a second location. The new shop is scheduled to open on Monday, July 21.
Taking over a space adjacent to ColdStone Creamery that previously belonged to a laundromat, the Springfield Victory Comics will be 1,510 square feet, per a recently issued Fairfax County occupancy permit. That’s just over half the size of its Falls Church location, which is approximately 3,500 square feet.
Once it opens, Victory Comics will largely have dominion over the heart of Springfield’s Community Business Center, with the closest rival comic book shop — Tosche Nation — sitting in Burke’s Huntsman Square, a roughly 12-minute drive away.
Located near the I-95 and I-395 interchange, Backlick Center is anchored by Advance Auto Parts, Outback Steakhouse and Chick-fil-A. It’s almost fully leased with just one 2,762-square-foot space available, according to a site plan from owner Glazer Properties.
