Police are investigating a second fatal crash that occurred on the Capital Beltway (I-495) yesterday afternoon (Monday).

Virginia State Police troopers responded to westbound I-495 near Telegraph Road in Huntington around 5:32 p.m. for a crash involving a motorcyclist who collided with a guardrail.

“The rider suffered serious injuries and succumbed to those injuries at an area hospital,” state police said. “The motorcycle continued down the interstate for nearly a mile after the collision.”

According to the VSP, investigators currently believe the crash may have been the result of a medical emergency suffered by the motorcyclist. An investigation is still underway.

The motorcycle crash occurred just a couple of hours after a multi-vehicle crash further to the west on I-495 killed one person and sent three others to the hospital.

That crash took place near Braddock Road in north Springfield shortly after 3 p.m. and involved a Scion XB hatchback, a Toyota Tacoma, a Honda Civic and a Ford F150 truck. One person in the Scion died at the scene, while three other people were taken to a hospital, one of them with injuries described by police as “serious.”

Work to clear the crash backed up traffic on the Beltway for miles until all lanes reopened around 5:50 p.m. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

As of press time, no updates on either crash were available, as a VSP spokesperson noted that it had been a busy morning for the state police.

Among other incidents, a trooper was injured after a Porsche driver crossed multiple lanes of I-395 near Pentagon City and crashed into their cruiser. The trooper’s injuries were described as “minor,” but police are still on the lookout for the driver, who reportedly fled the scene on foot.

The Fairfax County Police Department assisted state police and the Pentagon Force Protection Agency with an unsuccessful search of the area.
