A pedestrian who was hit by a driver in the Daventry neighborhood of West Springfield last week has died, police say.
Jay Kim, 76, of Springfield was apparently crossing Hunter Village Drive using the crosswalk at Rockledge Court Friday morning (Aug. 15) when the driver of a northbound 2007 Toyota Camry struck him, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
Police officers responded to the crash at 7:30 a.m. and found Kim suffering from injuries deemed life-threatening. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
The Toyota driver, who wasn’t injured, remained at the scene, police say. Northbound Hunter Village Drive was closed for a period that morning as detectives investigated the crash.
“Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash,” the FCPD said on Monday (Aug. 18) in a press release. “The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated.”
With Kim’s death, Fairfax County has now seen six pedestrians killed in traffic crashes so far in 2025, per state data. This is the second pedestrian fatality in the county this month, following the death of 19-year-old Angel Benito Matom Velasco, who died after being struck by the driver of a Lincoln Town Car on Little River Turnpike in Lincolnia shortly after midnight on Aug. 1.
