FCPD investigating fatal wrong-way crash in Centreville

Fairfax County police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash in Centerville earlier this week that killed an 80-year-old man.

Officers responded to the intersection at Sully Park Drive and Kamputa Drive on Monday (Aug. 25) afternoon after a wrong-way driver reportedly struck three other vehicles.

According to police, a preliminary investigation found that Darrell Ewing of Clifton was driving north in a Honda Pilot on Sully Park Road using the southbound lanes, prompting the three other drivers to all swerve in an attempt to avoid a collision.

Ewing suffered grave injuries in the crash and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Two occupants of the other vehicles involved suffered non-life threatening injuries and received treatment, police said.

But when it comes to understanding why Ewing was driving in the wrong lanes, that’s still to be determined.

“Preliminarily alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash,” the Fairfax County Police Department said yesterday (Tuesday) in a press release. “Detectives continue to investigate whether speed was a factor.”

Anybody who may have information about the crash is encouraged to contact FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543.

Ewing appears to be the third person to die in a crash in Fairfax County this August, bringing the overall death toll for 2025 up to 24 people, according to preliminary state data. Earlier this month, a 19-year-old pedestrian and a pickup truck driver were killed in crashes on Little River Turnpike and I-66, respectively.
