Fairfax County is set to host its inaugural expungement clinic on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hybla Valley Community Center (7950 Audubon Avenue).

The event offers an opportunity for those with non-conviction criminal charges from Fairfax County or Fairfax city to determine eligibility and petition for removal of the charges from their records, Fairfax County Circuit Court spokesperson Rafael Arancibia, Jr. said in a news release.

Expungement can significantly aid individuals by removing barriers to accessing employment, housing and other vital opportunities, the release said.

Volunteer attorneys will be available on-site to provide free guidance and prepare expungement petitions for attendees.

Additionally, the standard $86 filing fee will be sponsored for those who pre-register, while sponsorship funds remain available.

“I am proud to organize the first ever expungement clinic in Fairfax County with our elected and community partners,” Circuit Court Clerk Chris Falcon said in the release. “It can be very difficult to navigate the legal process. My gratitude to the volunteer attorneys giving up their time to help their community and reduce barriers to justice.”

Virginia has recently expanded the kinds of offenses eligible for expungement, leading to an uptick in requests in Fairfax County. A process for automatically sealing certain criminal records was set to take effect this July, but the General Assembly bumped that deadline back to July 1, 2026 to give localities more time to prepare.
