A Reston playground that was damaged by a storm this spring could return soon with some improvements.
Reston Association is currently seeking community feedback on potential upgrades for the Old Trail playground, which was mostly taken out by trees that fell during a rain storm on May 14, communications director Cara O’Donnell says.
Located off of Old Trail Drive, the playground previously featured a full jungle gym with slides, but now, all that remains is a pair of swing sets on either side of the lot.
“Our goal, depending on the feedback we receive from the community, is to have the work completed in the coming months,” O’Donnell said.
An online survey is currently open, asking community members if the site should remain a playground and, if so, what kinds of equipment and amenities it should have.
RA will also host a community input session at the playground next Monday (Sept. 8) at 6 p.m., giving community members a chance to share their thoughts in person.
“Help us build a better, more inclusive space!” RA said in a newsletter announcing the renovation project last Friday (Aug. 29).
The renovations will be funded by reimbursement money that RA received through its insurance, according to O’Donnell.
Old Trail joins a growing list of playgrounds that RA has slated for improvements. The homeowners’ association also sought input over the summer on possible upgrades for the Bordeaux and Hunting Horn tot lots, which are both expected to undergo renovations in 2026.
Replacements of the Purple Beech, Sanibel and Colts Brook tot lots are also in the works, per RA’s capital projects calendar. Engineering plans for all three projects still need to get approved by the association’s Design Review Board before work begins.
