New donut chain taking over Vienna storefront after failed Duck Donuts expansion

A donut shop is still coming to a vacant storefront on Maple Avenue in Vienna, though it won’t be the same one announced more than a year and a half ago.

Shipley Do-Nuts, a predominantly Southern-based chain that has been expanding across the East Coast, is now set to occupy the storefront at 256 Maple Avenue East.

The storefront, which previously housed a T-Mobile store, was said to be housing a future Duck Donuts location. Despite applying for permits to renovate the location, those permits have since been voided by the county.

What led to the project breaking down is currently unknown. A spokesperson for Duck Donuts did not respond to a media inquiry.

Instead, Shipley Do-Nuts will open its second Virginia location in the spot sometime next year, a company spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow.

“We look forward to opening the first Shipley Donuts in Vienna on Maple Avenue in 2026, bringing our famous handmade fresh daily donuts and kolaches to the community,” Ashley Lennington said.

The brand’s wide menu includes more than 40 different donuts, including iced, filled and cake, plus seven different varieties of kolaches.

Shipley’s also carries an assortment of pastries, including apple fritters, bear claws, cinnamon rolls and much more.

Founded in the early 20th century, the brand’s first brick-and-mortar store in the 1940s. Since then, the chain boasts more than 300 locations nationwide.

The new donut shop will have some competition. Across Maple Avenue, a Texas Donuts location is coming soon, though a specific date is currently unknown.
