Lane closures and gas lamp removals planned this weekend in Fairfax

A couple of projects will create some road closures and detours around Fairfax this weekend.

The first is a ramp closure on Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) onto I-95 tonight and again on Monday (Sept. 22).

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation:

Weather permitting, the northbound Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) ramp to northbound I-95 (95 North to Washington) will be closed tonight and Monday night, Sept. 22, for paving, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The ramp closures will occur as follows:

  • 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, to 4 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20
  • 11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, to 4 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23

VDOT said traffic will be detoured around the ramp.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the removal of gas lamps will create some temporary lane closures in the City of Fairfax.

According to the City of Fairfax:

Washington Gas will be removing gas lamps in Old Town (North Street and Blenheim Boulevard area) starting Sunday, Sept. 21. The work will be performed at night. Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal; however, temporary lane closures are possible. Gas lamps will be replaced with LED streetlights.

The City also said a portion of the James Swart Circle at the Fairfax Court shopping center will be closed for the next month as part of an extension of Government Center Parkway. The new extension will install sidealks, pedestrian crosswalks, bike lanes and more.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 22, the short section of James Swart Circle will close until Nov. 1. All other entrances to the shopping center will remain open. The road will open again before the holiday shopping season. This work is associated with the project to extend Government Center Parkway to Waples Mill Road.
