Five years later, FCPD still investigating unsolved Lorton murder

Local law enforcement continues to investigate a Lorton murder that occurred five years ago this week.

It is still unknown who fired the gunshot that struck and killed 37-year-old Leonard Brown in a residential neighborhood off of Richmond Highway on Sept. 21, 2020.

Detectives continue to seek tips from residents, including any potential information regarding two people allegedly seen walking near the scene just before the shooting, the Fairfax County Police Department said today (Monday).

Fairfax County police officers responded to the 9800 block of Hagel Circle in Lorton around 9:22 p.m. that evening for a report of a shooting. Upon arriving, the officers discovered Brown and another man suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Though the second victim was transported to a local hospital and later released, Brown, an Alexandria resident, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

No arrests or charges have been announced in the years since Brown’s death, but the FCPD says detectives are investigating the shooting as a murder.

“In the years that followed his murder, detectives from the Homicide Unit have continued their efforts to meticulously review the evidence to identify a suspect,” the department said in a press release.”

A photo taken from surveillance video and released by the department today shows two hooded figures walking on a foot path, though no identifiable information — outside of shadows — is visible.

Anybody with information is encouraged to contact FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau or submit an anonymous tip through Crimesolvers.
