Police investigating fatal shooting in Woodlawn after car break-in report

The Fairfax Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in Woodlawn early on Sept. 19.

Scanner traffic indicated a car was spotted being broken into on the 3400 block of Buckman Road, a residential neighborhood.

According to a police report:

On September 19 at 4:45 a.m., officers responded to the 3400 block of Buckman Road in Woodlawn for a report of vehicle tampering. While in the area, officers located Jaylin Hartless, 21, of Alexandria, on the ground next to his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Officers attempted CPR before fire and rescue personnel declared him deceased on scene.

Detectives are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. Preliminarily, this does not appear to be a random act.
