UPDATED: One dead, two injured in wrong-way Fort Belvoir crash

One driver was killed yesterday (Sunday) night after colliding with oncoming traffic in the Fort Belvoir area.

The crash occurred shortly before 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of Jeff Todd Way and Telegraph Road when a northbound Cadillac driver crossed over a median on Jeff Todd Way and hit a southbound Toyota Highlander head-on.

The Cadillac Deville driver was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 7:48 p.m., one first responder said over the emergency scanner. The Fairfax County Police Department identified the driver today (Monday) as William Poe Jr., a 49-year-old Alexandria resident.

The two occupants of the Toyota Highlander — an adult man and woman — suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital, police said.

Police are still investigating the incident.

“Detectives are investigating whether speed, alcohol, or a possible medical emergency contributed to the crash,” the FCPD said in a press release.

A fatal crash previously occurred at the intersection in 2023, when a man also believed to be traveling in the wrong lanes crashed head-on into another vehicle.
