Fairfax County police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred last night (Wednesday) in the Hutchison neighborhood near Herndon.

Officers were dispatched to the 13000 block of Parcher Avenue at 9:31 p.m. for a “suspicious person” call. The caller reported seeing an unconscious person lying on the ground with “lots of blood coming from the leg,” according to scanner traffic.

“Officers responded and located an unresponsive juvenile male victim with a gunshot wound to his lower body,” the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release today (Thursday).

The boy was declared dead at the scene.

Police say the shooting doesn’t appear to be a random act, and detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau are investigating it as a homicide.

The exact cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which still has to conduct an autopsy.

“Detectives continue to conduct interviews, collect video surveillance, and process evidence recovered from the scene to determine the circumstances that led up to the fatal shooting,” the FCPD said.

Police didn’t specify the location of the shooting, but a spokesperson says the victim was a teen with no connection to Hutchison Elementary School, which is in that block.

The same block was the site of a shooting in September 2024. Reportedly shot during a fight, the 21-year-old man in that incident was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The spelling of Hutchison has been corrected.
