An Alexandria man who shot another man during a botched robbery in Bailey’s Crossroads will spend the next decade behind bars.
Abner Neftali Selen Barrera, 26, was sentenced Friday (Oct. 17) to 10 years of active incarceration for his role in the incident, which left the other man with non-life-threatening injuries.
Following his release, Selen Barrera will be subject to a five-year probationary period. If he violates the terms of his probation, he would serve an additional 30 years in prison — resulting in 40 years of incarceration total.
Selen Barrera pleaded guilty in July to one count of aggravated malicious wounding, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Selen Barrera shot the man around 5 a.m. on April 12, 2024, in the 3400 block of Lake Street.
“The victim, an adult man, exited his vehicle and was approached by the suspect who displayed a firearm and demanded the victim’s property,” the FCPD said at the time. “A struggle ensued and the victim was shot in the lower body.”
The victim was reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
