Fairfax County fire department seeks to revitalize ‘Adopt a Hydrant’ program

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is hoping to improve fire response by enlisting the help of the community.

The department re-launched its “Adopt a Hydrant” program earlier this month, allowing residents to assist firefighters by ensuring fire hydrants remain accessible during an emergency.

Under the program, volunteers commit to removing overgrown vegetation, clearing snow and removing debris.

“It is vital that firefighters be able to quickly access a hydrant in the event of a fire,” spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt told FFXnow. “Immediate access to a water supply helps to swiftly extinguish the fire and prevent loss of life and property.”

Though the program was first launched in 2017, its reintroduction this month comes with the launch of “a new and improved website application for identifying and adopting a hydrant near you,” Hildebrandt said.

Those interested in participating can visit the new website and enter their address to see a map of the hydrants closest to them. Hydrants eligible for adoption will have a blue button leading to an application form, while those that have already been selected will be marked with the date of their adoption.

After filling out a form, approved applicants will receive an e-mail confirmation and an official certificate of adoption.
