The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department is investigating a fire at a home in the Herndon area where two people were found dead.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 1500 block of Shellbark Place in Dranesville around 7:20 a.m. for the house fire. They arrived at the single-family home to see visible fire and “a large amount of black smoke in the area,” according to scanner traffic.
Initial attempts to determine if anyone was inside didn’t receive any response, but firefighters were able to gain entry to the home by 7:34 a.m. During a search of the residence, two people “were found deceased,” the fire department said.
It’s not clear yet whether the deaths occurred during or prior to the fire.
As of 9:20 a.m., the fire has been extinguished, but investigators remain on the scene. The Fairfax County Police Department is assisting with traffic control, the FCFRD said.
