Like some businesses, local government offices and many services are set to close for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Administrative offices for Fairfax County as well as smaller jurisdictions like Vienna, Herndon and Fairfax City will all be closed on both Thursday and Friday (Nov. 27-28). However, some services will still be available or follow modified schedules.

Here’s what to expect:

Courts

Fairfax County Circuit Court will wrap up proceedings early at noon today (Wednesday) before remaining closed through Friday. The general district and juvenile and domestic relations courts, however, will be closed only on Thursday and Friday.

The City of Fairfax General District Court will similarly close on Thursday and Friday but follow its regular hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. today.

Trash and recycling

Fairfax County will not make any changes to its trash and recycling services, but the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will be closed on Thanksgiving and on Friday. Residents who utilize private services are advised to contact their hauler.

In a notice posted online yesterday (Tuesday), the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services acknowledged that it’s running behind on special pickups of brush, electronics, metal and bulk materials.

“We are currently working on resolving the service delays,” DPWES said. “If your service has not yet been completed, please leave your items at the curb or street line so they can be collected as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”

Fairfax City and the towns of Vienna and Herndon will all pick up trash and recycling along both their Thursday and Friday routes on Friday, Nov. 28. Herndon won’t provide any yard waste collections this week, while Fairfax City says yard waste pickups between Nov. 25 and 30 “may be delayed.”

Transportation

Metro will provide train service to all stations from 6 a.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving, while buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking at all Metro-owned lots and garages will be free that day, but standard weekday fares will still be in effect.

Metro will resume regular service in both cases on Friday.

Fairfax Connector is operating on a Sunday schedule tomorrow (Thursday) and a holiday weekday schedule on Friday. The county bus system’s transit stores and customer service center will close tomorrow, reopening for regular hours on Friday.

Fairfax City won’t have any CUE buses running tomorrow, but modified weekday service will be available on Friday, with one bus operating on each route.

To facilitate travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation is suspending most highway work zones and lifting temporary lane closures at noon today until noon on Monday (Dec. 1).

Community centers

The McLean Community Center will close tomorrow and Friday, resuming all classes, programs and events on Dec. 1

Like in past years, Reston Community Center is closing its Lake Anne facility for the holidays, while keeping its Hunters Woods facility (2310 Colts Neck Road) open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

The Vienna Community Center will be closed for Thanksgiving and open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. No open gym sessions will be available.

In Herndon, the community center closes early at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) and will remain closed Thursday and Friday.

Libraries, parks and recreation

All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be closed both tomorrow and Friday.

The Fairfax County Park Authority will close most facilities for Thanksgiving, except for its recreation centers, which will stay open from 6 a.m. until noon.

On Friday, all rec centers and golf courses will reopen for their normal operating hours, and Lake Fairfax Park’s visitor center and marina will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Frying Pan Farm Park’s farm and indoor arena will open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with its visitor center closing an hour earlier at 4 p.m.

In Herndon, the indoor tennis center at Bready Park is following shortened hours today of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. before closing for the next two days. If weather permits, Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Historic Blenheim and the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center in Fairfax City will both be closed on Thanksgiving and Friday.
