Metro will provide free rides and two extra hours of train service tonight (Wednesday) to support safe travel for New Year’s Eve revelers.

Fares will be free for both train and bus riders from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., thanks to a partnership between the transit agency and the brewing company Molson Coors, before service is reduced to a weekend late night schedule and a Sunday schedule, respectively, on New Year’s Day.

Parking will also be free starting at 8 p.m. tonight and throughout New Year’s Day tomorrow (Thursday).

New Year’s Day will affect a number of other public services across Fairfax County. With workers taking time off for the holiday, the county, towns of Vienna and Herndon, and Fairfax City will close all administrative offices for the day, as they did for Christmas.

Courts

Fairfax County’s circuit and general district courts are both closed today and tomorrow, while the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court will close only for New Year’s Day.

The City of Fairfax General District Court, which typically holds hearings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will close on Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will collect trash and recycling based on its regular schedule on New Year’s Day, even though its administrative office will be closed, reopening at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 2).

Recycling and disposal centers at the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will close at 2 p.m. today and remain closed all day tomorrow.

Fairfax City, Vienna and Herndon will not collect trash on New Year’s Day, with both Fairfax City and Herndon picking up Thursday collections on Friday instead.

Transportation

Fairfax Connector is providing regular weekday service today but only Sunday service on New Year’s Day. Its transit stores and customer service center will also be closed on Jan. 1.

Fairfax City’s CUE Bus system will have no service tomorrow and modified weekday service for both New Year’s Eve and Jan. 2.

Like it did for Christmas, the Virginia Department of Transportation is temporarily suspending most highway work zones and temporary lane closures from noon today to noon on Friday.

Community centers

The McLean Community Center will close early at 5 p.m. today and remain shuttered through New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, Reston Community Center’s Lake Anne facility is closed for both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but the Hunters Woods site at 2310 Colts Neck Road will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The Vienna Community Center is open today until 4:30 p.m. but will be closed tomorrow. The Herndon Community Center will also have shortened hours of 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. today before closing for New Year’s Day.

Libraries, parks and recreation

Fairfax County Public Library will close all branches early at 5 p.m. today and won’t reopen them until Friday (Jan. 2).

Most Fairfax County Park Authority facilities are operating today, with the exception of the Colvin Run Mill historic site, all nature centers, the visitor center at Riverbend Park in Great Falls and the historic house at Green Spring Gardens in Lincolnia. On New Year’s Day, closures will be more widespread, as only recreation centers and the golf courses will be open.

In Herndon, the tennis center at Bready Park will be open until 2 p.m. today before closing tomorrow. The Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today, with a New Year’s Eve golf tournament scheduled to start at 10 a.m., and its New Year’s Day hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., if allowed by the weather.

Fairfax City’s Historic Blenheim and the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center will both be closed on Jan. 1.
