Fairfax County police are investigating whether speed may have contributed to a crash that killed a driver on Fairfax County Parkway this weekend.

Jane Clayton, a 48-year-old Alexandria resident, died after she appears to have “lost control” of her 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier while driving on the parkway near Huntsman Blvd in Burke around 7:45 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 10), according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

A preliminary investigation suggests Clayton was heading north on Fairfax County Parkway but crossed into the southbound lanes when she lost control, police said.

“The driver of a 2023 Ford F-150, traveling southbound, struck the Chevrolet. The driver of a 2025 Honda HR-V, also traveling southbound, was unable to brake in time and rear-ended the Ford F-150,” the FCPD said last night (Monday) in a press release.

Clayton was declared dead at the scene of the crash. The Honda and Ford drivers didn’t sustain any injuries.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing.

“Preliminarily, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash,” the FCPD said. “Detectives continue to investigate whether speed was a factor.”

Clayton is the third person to be killed in a crash on Fairfax County roads in the first two weeks of 2026 after two pedestrians died in separate hit-and-runs on Little River Turnpike and Richmond Highway last Wednesday (Jan. 7). There were seven fatalities last month by FFXnow’s count, bringing the death toll for 2025 up to 39 people based on preliminary state data.
