Reston Association CEO Mac Cummins has stepped down, requiring the homeowners’ association to conduct its third search for a top executive in less than a decade.
Cummins resigned effective immediately to “pursue new professional opportunities,” RA President Travis Johnson announced at a board of directors meeting last night (Thursday).
“We appreciate Mac’s contributions to Reston and his leadership of the staff,” Johnson said. “We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
It’s unclear when exactly the board learned that Cummins would step down, but it did have a special meeting on Jan. 15 with a closed session to discuss “personnel matters” and consult with legal counsel.
Formerly a community development director for Bellevue, Washington, Cummins was hired by RA in July 2022 after a nearly year-long effort to fill a position vacated the previous September by Hank Lynch, who had come on board in January 2019 following the departure of his predecessor and her initial acting replacement within a two-month span.
In a statement, RA and its board praised Cummins for overseeing “significant organizational milestones,” improving the delivery of services to members and providing “faithful stewardship” of the organization’s resources during his over three-year tenure.
Under Cummins, RA introduced free recreation passes for all members, completed comprehensive facility reviews, expanded swimming pool hours, launched a new website, and retooled its approach to fees and the annual budget, among other initiatives.
“It has been a privilege to serve the members of Reston Association,” Cummins said in a press release. “I would like to thank the Board of Directors, staff and the Senior Leadership Team for their dedication and hard work to make Reston a fantastic place during my tenure, and I look forward to seeing their continued success in the future for the members of the Reston Association.”
Current Chief Operating Officer Peter Lusk will serve as RA’s acting CEO until a permanent replacement is chosen. The association didn’t immediately share any information about the planned search process.
