JUST IN: Fairfax County schools closed Monday due to Winter Storm Fern

As Winter Storm Fern brings a mix of snow and sleet to the region, Fairfax County Public Schools has canceled classes tomorrow (Monday).

All schools and central offices will be closed Monday, as well as school programs and activities on school grounds. Fairfax County and the rest of the D.C. region are under a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service through 4 a.m. Monday.

Forecasters expected between 6 and 10 inches of snow and sleet, with a sleet and freezing rain mix into Sunday afternoon. Conditions could remain icy beyond Sunday’s storm as below-freezing temperatures linger throughout the week.

All FCPS schools and central offices are closed Monday, January 26. The following activities in schools and on school grounds are canceled:

  • Extracurricular activities.
  • Interscholastic contests.
  • Team practices.
  • Field trips.
  • Middle school after-school programs.
  • Professional learning and training courses.
  • Adult High School and GED.
  • Adult and Community Education (ACE) classes.
  • Recreation programs and community use by outside groups not affiliated with FCPS.
  • Homebound instruction.
  • School Age Child Care (SACC) and Beyond the Bell (BTB) centers are also closed.

In accordance with Regulation 4810, employees designated as essential personnel should follow supervisor direction. Emergency administrative leave is authorized for all other personnel. Additional updates will be available on the FCPS website and the FCPS Mobile App.

Families and staff can refer to the Weather Resources on the FCPS website for additional details about community resources during winter storms, where to get the latest snow information from Fairfax County and VDOT, emergency contact information for law enforcement, and how to track power outages in your area.

Fairfax County and the Town of Vienna have also canceled trash and recycling collection for tomorrow, pushing pickups to Tuesday (Jan. 27). The Town of Herndon won’t pick up recycling tomorrow or Tuesday.
