Two dogs sustained grave injuries today (Thursday) in a West Springfield house fire.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to a middle-unit townhome in the 5800 block of Rexford Drive shortly after 10 a.m.
An occupant of a neighboring townhome first reported smoke inside their unit. Firefighters determined that the smoke originated from a basement fire next door, according to scanner traffic.
The fire was reported to be under control by 11:45 a.m., the department said.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The two dogs were rescued from the home but later succumbed to their injuries.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
