NEW: Vienna bookshop Bards Alley to move after owner buys nearby building

An independent bookstore in Vienna will relocate within the next year after its owner purchased a building nearby.

After 10 years of leasing its current storefront at 110 Church Street NW, it was time to find a permanent home for Bards Alley Bookshop, owner Jennifer Morrow announced today (Wednesday).

Morrow found that in 103 Church Street NE, which is a two-minute walk away from the current shop. She purchased the building for $1.5 million earlier this month, giving it new life after the previous occupant of 55 years — John Edwards Hair Design — closed upon owner John Kurcina’s retirement in mid-January.

“It’s not only the perfect location, the corner of Church and Center streets, but the exact footprint I was hoping to occupy,” Morrow told FFXnow. My primary goal was to remain on historic Church Street, which is a hub for restaurants and small local retail shops. It’s a walkable and bike friendly area and easily accessible from the W&OD trail.”

Morrow officially took possession of the building last Thursday (Feb. 5). The process “remains in the outline stage,” with the shop “tentatively” aiming to open its new location next fall or winter, she said.

The 1,686-square-foot building was constructed in 1900, according to Fairfax County property records. Renovations will take place, though it’s not clear yet to what extent.

“This location will have private parking for Bards Alley customers, a dedicated space for events like book clubs, and the building itself, built in c. 1900, has its own history, which was important for me to preserve,” Morrow said.

It is expected that little will change as the bookstore shifts to its new location, though there will be some notable additions.

“We will have dedicated space for meetings and events, which we have had to host on the sales floor to date,” Morrow said. “Additionally, we will have a receiving room, storage for overstock, and office space. Not very flashy, but this will make a huge difference for us behind the scenes operationally.”

First opened in 2017, Bards Alley has long sold books for a variety of ages and ideas, spanning from picture books to the latest adult best sellers. The store’s inventory also includes assorted stationery, plush toys and other gift items.

Along with its book sales, Bards Alley has long hosted author talks, book clubs and much more.

“Jen has created more than a bookstore; she’s built a community hub, bringing people together through stories, author events and genuine connection,” Vienna Economic Development Director Nicole Toulouse said in a statement. “We’re excited for the next chapter at this iconic new location in the heart of Vienna.”

The length of Bards Alley’s lease at its current location has been corrected.
