A Mantua man was shot and killed today (Monday) by Fairfax County police officers after he allegedly stabbed three family members, including his daughter and wife.

Both the man’s daughter and wife have died as a result of the injuries they sustained in the attack, which occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the 3900 block of Persimmon Circle, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

Officers responding to the scene encountered the man as he was in the midst of stabbing his son-in-law, according to Police Chief Kevin Davis.

The man did not heed calls to drop the knife, leading one officer to fire his gun, police said. Though officers performed CPR on the not-yet-identified man, he ultimately died at the scene.

“Preliminarily … [the officer] did exactly what we expect him to do and, quite frankly, exactly what our community expects him to do,” Davis said in a media briefing earlier this morning.

According to police, the son-in-law was outside when the incident began. Upon hearing a commotion in the house, he entered to find the man stabbing the son-in-law’s wife and mother-in-law.

The man’s daughter was pronounced dead at the scene. After being transported to a local hospital, his wife was pronounced dead just before 9 a.m., police said.

Additionally, the man’s son-in-law sustained life-threatening injuries and is in grave condition, according to police.

“The carnage that was perpetrated by this man in his 50s on his own family is unimaginable,” Davis said.

A 1-year-old child who was also in the residence was found unharmed, and the knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered at the scene.
