UPDATED: Man shot by police on I-495 after allegedly stabbing multiple people

A man was shot by the Virginia State Police today (Sunday) after allegedly stabbing multiple people on I-495.

The incident is believed to have begun with a traffic collision that then led to a man exiting his vehicle and stabbing at least three people, according to scanner traffic.

“It started as a property damage crash and now he’s stabbing people with a knife,” police said on the scanner.

A state police trooper responded to what was reported as a road rage incident around 1:17 p.m. and encountered a man carrying a knife, a VSP spokesperson said.

“The trooper then shot the suspect in self-defense,” the VSP said, though it remains unclear what interaction the suspect had with police before shots were fired.

Later identified as 32-year-old Jared Llamado of McLean, the man was transported to a hospital, ultimately dying from his injuries.

According to the VSP, four people who had been stabbed were found at the scene, including 39-year-old Michele Adams of Fairfax, who later died. The other three individuals — all women between 36 and 40 years old — remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that Llamado did not know the victims prior to the incident,” the state police said in an update on March 3. “None of the victims were in Llamado’s vehicle.”

Llamado also allegedly stabbed his own dog, who died, police said.

The incident occurred on the highway’s southbound lanes, just before the Little River Turnpike exit in Annandale. Southbound I-495 remained closed for hours afterwards.

“The trapped queue has been cleared but SB 495 will remain closed,” the Virginia Department of Transportation said shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday. “This will continue to be an extended closure. Please follow detours or seek alternate routes.”

An investigation into the crash and stabbings remains underway. The trooper who shot Llamado has been placed on administrative leave “pending the outcome of the investigation,” the VSP said.
