Identity of skeletal remains found in Fair Lakes 20 years ago still unknown

Local and state investigators continue to hunt for the identity behind skeletal remains found in Fair Lakes two decades ago.

It’s been 20 years and two days since the remains were discovered in a wooded area near the I-66 East ramp to the northbound lanes of Fairfax County Parkway on April 6, 2006.

“Our Cold Case Unit is aware of this case, and there are no updates at this time,” a Fairfax County Police Department spokesperson told FFXnow.

The remains were located near a small shack containing “personal effects” believed to have belonged to the individual, who was likely a white man between the ages of 55 and 70 years old, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

No identifying information, such as a driver’s license, was recovered. Only clothing and a rosary were located on or near the remains.

“A member of the public initially located the remains, and responding officers conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area,” the FCPD spokesperson said. “At this time, the case does not appear to be criminal in nature.”

Investigators noted that the man had jaw deformities that not only would have made eating difficult, but also would have affected the man’s speech. A bust depicting what the man is believed to have looked like suggests he may have been missing a front tooth.

Anybody with information that could help identify the individual is encouraged to contact Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Northern District at (703) 530-2600 or via email.
