Fairfax County police have arrested a man believed to be the naked burglar who has recently targeted Centreville-area homes.
Two weeks after home surveillance footage was released showing a man wearing nothing but a face covering and sneakers in a local backyard, the man — a resident of the London Towne neighborhood — was taken into custody this morning (Monday).
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Sedrick Walker, has been charged with multiple counts of burglary, attempted burglary and indecent exposure, the Fairfax County Police Department announced.
“Obviously he has some urges, [some] criminal tendencies, the likes of which we don’t have our minds wrapped around yet,” FCPD chief Kevin Davis said at an afternoon press conference.
Walker was taken into custody around 4:45 a.m. after being spotted by detective-monitored surveillance cameras that had recently been placed in the area. Officers then deployed nearby drones to track the suspect, who fled on foot.
Aided by the department’s “Drone First Responder” program, police spotted Walker entering a townhome in the 14000 block of Gatwick Square. Officers responded to the home, eventually luring Walker out and placing him under arrest.
Partial footage of the foot chase, as seen from an aerial drone, was released by the FCPD.
“We wouldn’t know what townhouse he went into without the drones in the air,” Davis said. “We would be back to square one, arguably. The [program] is continuing to prove its value to public safety, to the crime fight and to safer outcomes for the community.”
Dating back to March 7, Walker is believed to have burglarized — or attempted to burglarize — five different homes, all within less than a mile of each other in Centreville’s London Towne neighborhood. Each residence was accessed through an unsecured door, police said.
In four of the five instances, a fully-nude suspect was spotted inside or near a residence by the residence’s occupants. Nothing was reported stolen from any of the homes, police noted.
A motive for the alleged behavior is not currently known, FCPD Maj. Jim Curry said.
Walker does not yet have a scheduled court date, according to online court records, though he is expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
“In this case, it’s a slam dunk — yes, we have overwhelming evidence identifying this person as our perpetrator,” Davis said.
