Police and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched around 1:43 p.m. to Richmond Highway at Lorton Road near Gunston Plaza for a crash described initially as involving “an 18-wheeler,” according to scanner traffic.
The motorcyclist was found “entangled in the bike,” requiring some metal to be cut away. The Fairfax 1 police helicopter was called to assist with the medical evacuation, landing in the northbound lanes of Richmond Highway at approximately 2:13 p.m.
“The motorcyclist, an adult male, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries,” the Fairfax County Police Department said on social media shortly before 2:30 p.m.
The truck driver remained at the scene of the crash, which temporarily shut down traffic on Richmond Highway in both directions near Lorton Road. As of 3 p.m., the southbound lanes had reopened, along with one left northbound lane.
Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are investigating the crash, the FCPD said.
