A man from the Groveton area will face a slew of criminal charges once he leaves the hospital after allegedly stealing a delivery van and crashing it multiple times on Richmond Highway, injuring himself and another driver.

Officers responded around 3:31 p.m. on Wednesday (May 13) to Richmond Highway and Lorton Road in Lorton after receiving reports of “a multi-vehicle crash involving a stolen package delivery van that had been taken earlier in the day” in Fort Belvoir, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

According to the FCPD:

Preliminarily, detectives determined Ibrahim Osman Hussein, 31, of Alexandria, stole an unoccupied 2020 Ram ProMaster while a delivery driver was making deliveries in the 9100 block of Richmond Highway. Hussen then drove southbound on Richmond Highway and struck multiple vehicles, causing minor damage. After the initial crash, Hussen crossed into the northbound lanes near Lorton Road and struck a 2015 Nissan Altima and a 2023 Nissan Sentra before coming to rest.

The Nissan Altima driver, an adult woman, was transported to a hospital in life-threatening condition. As of last night (Thursday), she was still hospitalized with injuries that police described as “serious.”

The Nissan Sentra driver survived the crash unscathed, but Hussein was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries police said. He also remains hospitalized.

According to a press release, the FCPD believes Hussein was also behind a burglary reported later Wednesday in the 9300 block of Old Colchester Road in Lorton.

Charged with burglary, felony hit and run, reckless driving, grand larceny, trespassing and petit larceny, he will be placed in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center once he’s medically cleared to leave the hospital, the FCPD said.

The crash on Richmond Highway remains under investigation.

“Detectives continue to determine whether speed and alcohol were a factor in the crash,” the FCPD said.
