Drive-thru Panda Express eyes summer opening in Herndon

Construction is well underway to transform Herndon’s former Burger King into a future Panda Express.

The Chinese American chain is “tentatively” aiming to open at 598 Elden Street in late July, though the timing could be affected by any construction delays, Panda Express public relations representative Brittany Rouse says.

In the works for almost two years now, the Herndon location will feature a drive-thru lane and a signature “Panda Home” design that fuses traditional and modern elements.

“The new ‘Panda Home’ restaurant design is distinctly American Chinese,” Rouse told FFXnow by email. “Just like Panda Express, design elements bridge the East and the West. Inside, you’ll find nods to traditional Chinese architecture like red lanterns, a moon gate portal and vibrant Chinatown signs.”

Wood paneling has been installed along the building’s exterior, along with identifying signage. A temporary banner hanging from trees over a sidewalk onto the property indicates that the business is now hiring, advertising $100,000 or more “in total compensation.”

The 3,836-square-foot restaurant is expected to employ almost 40 workers from the Herndon area once it opens, according to Rouse.

Founded in 1983 by husband-and-wife team Andrew and Peggy Cherng, Panda Express has expanded from a single stall at Glendale Galleria mall in California to more than 2,600 stores around the world.

The prototypical Chinese American fast-casual chain lays claim to innovations from orange chicken — created, it says, in 1987 by chef Andy Kao — to a profit-sharing business structure for general managers. Its menu features both build-your-own and pre-set rice and noodle bowls and plates.

The Herndon location will join nine existing Panda Express sites in Fairfax County, including ones in Tysons Corner Center, Fair Oaks Mall and Fort Belvoir. Until the new restaurant opens, the closest option for Herndon diners is in Greenbriar Town Center (13059 Route 50) east of Chantilly.
