A driver was taken into police custody last night (Thursday) after allegedly traveling the wrong way on I-95 and crashing into two different vehicles on I-395.

The Virginia State Police responded at around 7:37 p.m. after being notified that a vehicle was traveling north in the I-95 Express Lanes in Prince William County at a time when traffic on the highway was supposed to be flowing south, according to a VSP spokesperson.

“A trooper was able to locate the vehicle on Interstate 395 in Fairfax County and entered the express lanes north of its location,” state police said. “The suspect vehicle then struck the trooper’s vehicle as well as an unrelated vehicle.”

According to public safety watcher Dave Statter, the crashes occurred near the Edsall Road interchange in the Springfield area near Lincolnia.

Traffic camera video shared by Statter shows that the express lanes were temporarily shut down as a result of the crashes. One vehicle appears to have smashed into the wall separating the toll lanes from general traffic, and another sustained damage to its rear fender.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department was also dispatched to provide medical assistance.

According to police, the driver who initiated the crash was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for an evaluation.

“The trooper was also taken to hospital as well to be checked out,” the VSP spokesperson said.
