Richard Bernard Kirk, 91, of Fairfax, VA passed away peacefully at his home at The Virginian senior living community on July 15, 2026.
He was born in Auburn, New York on November 17, 1934 to Kenneth Bernard and Evelyn L. (Hickey) Kirk.
Richard graduated from Auburn Central High School in 1952. He married his High School sweetheart Florence Louise (Townsend) Kirk on June 25, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn.
He joined the US Navy in August 1952 and retired in August 1977 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was assigned to the Eastern Sea Frontier in Brooklyn NY, USS Oriskany, USS Wright, USS North Hampton, and USS Valley Forge. He also served on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. His final assignment was with the Bureau of Naval Personnel at the Navy Annex in Arlington, VA.
After his military career, he worked at Navy Federal Credit Union headquarters in Vienna, VA and retired in 1996 as a Credit Union Money Order Manager.
He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Notre Dame football, and the Washington Commanders. He was a member of American Legion Post 139 in Arlington and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed traveling with Florence and spending time with friends and family.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Florence, his sisters Marilyn Zeyak, Laura Jeanne Jansen, and daughter Mary Garcia.
He is survived by his children: Richard Jr. (Shelly) Kirk, Martin Kirk (Cora Berndt), Sherrie (Bobby) Paintiff, Judy (Mark) Moss, Christopher (Sherry) Kirk, and his grandchildren Kyle, Kevin, Ken, Amy, Tony, Evelyn, Erica, Mark, Jonathan, Ricky, Darrell, Jennifer, Katey, and numerous great grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home (4143 Dale Blvd) in Woodbridge on Monday, July 27, 2026 from 10am to 11am. A life celebration service is scheduled for 11am with interment following at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, VA.
