One man is in the hospital, and another has been arrested after an argument escalated to a shooting in Hybla Valley over the weekend.
Officers were dispatched to the 7900 block of Fordson Road in the Gum Springs area at 6:24 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 22) for the reported shooting, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
Upon arriving, officers found an adult man “suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body,” the FCPD said in a press release published this morning (Tuesday). The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.
An investigation by the department’s Major Crimes Bureau detectives found that the shooter and victim are acquainted with each other.
“Preliminarily, detectives determined that the victim and suspect were among a group of individuals when a verbal argument occurred, leading to the shooting,” the FCPD said. “Detectives identified the shooter as Jihad Oliver-White, 24, of Alexandria.”
According to police, detectives found multiple guns in Oliver-White’s residence — which is in the zip code that includes Mount Vernon and Woodlawn, court records show.
He was arrested on Sunday (Aug. 23) and taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he remains in custody without bond following an arraignment yesterday (Monday).
Oliver-White has been charged with malicious wounding, shooting at an occupied dwelling and using a firearm in the commission of a felony, the FCPD said.
All three charges are felonies, with convictions of malicious wounding and shooting at an occupied dwelling resulting in potential sentences of five to 20 and two to 10 years in prison, respectively. Use of a gun while committing a felony carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three years in prison for a first offense, which would be the case for Oliver-White if he’s convicted.
A preliminary hearing on the case has been scheduled for Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. in Fairfax County General District Court.
