Three people died Sunday afternoon (Sept. 6) after their SUV crashed into a truck carrying oxygen tanks on I-66 in Dunn Loring.
At around 4:10 p.m., the driver of a Honda Pilot struck the rear of a truck transporting oxygen tanks that was stopped in the westbound express lanes at mile marker 64.3 near the I-495 interchange, according to the Virginia State Police.
The crash resulted in the Honda catching fire, and all three occupants, including the driver, died at the scene.
“Preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota 4Runner was also involved in the events leading up to the crash,” the VSP said yesterday (Monday) in a press release. “Following consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the drivers of the Toyota and the truck were charged with reckless driving.”
The I-66 Express Lanes were closed for a period after the crash, ultimately reopening shortly before 11 p.m. on Sunday. The crash remains under police investigation.
At 4:10 p.m., VSP responded to a fatal, multi-vehicle crash on westbound I-66 in the express lanes at the 64.2-mile marker in Fairfax County. Troopers are currently working on identifying the deceased and notifying next of kin. This is currently an active scene.
