A Fairfax woman killed while walking on Route 28 in Chantilly earlier this week was struck by multiple cars, police say.
Fiona Hagengimana, 32, was walking in the northbound lanes of Route 28 (Sully Road), just north of Route 50, when she was struck by a vehicle around 11 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 29), according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
She was then hit by “several additional vehicles,” police said in a press release this afternoon (Friday). At least two drivers stayed at the scene, though the original driver doesn’t appear to have been one of them.
All northbound lanes of Route 28 were closed north of Route 50, near the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum’s Udvar Hazy Center and the Sully Historic Site, during the overnight response.
Detectives are still investigating the incident, including whether alcohol might’ve been a factor in the crash.
“Detectives are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and identify the initial striking vehicle and driver,” police said in a press release.
Victim Services Specialists from the Major Crimes Bureau are offering resources and assistance to Hagengimana’s family. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543.
