A member of Reston Association’s Board of Directors has stepped down, opening up a vacancy months ahead of the next election.

At-large director Matt Mullenix submitted his resignation to the full board ahead of its meeting last Thursday (Oct. 8), effective immediately, according to RA.

“On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Matt for his leadership and for his service to the Association,” Board President Travis Johnson said in a news release. “We wish him the very best and thank him for his many contributions to our community.”

An executive vice president at the Reston-based engineering firm Bowman Consulting, Mullenix was elected as one of RA’s four at-large board members in spring 2025. During the election, which didn’t have any other candidates for the position, he expressed a desire to use his experience in business and technology to help improve the homeowners’ association’s communications, operations and community engagement.

While on the board, Mullenix served as treasurer, a role that tasked him with monitoring the organization’s financial records and data. Not everyone would’ve taken on those responsibilities so eagerly, Johnson noted when announcing Mullenix’s resignation on Thursday during a joint meeting with the finance committee.

“He took the baton and ran with it and, I think, did a very good job for the past year and a half,” the board president said. “He brought professionalism and fairness to this role, and I for one am very grateful for the time he gave to us and looking forward to working with him on a lot of other things in the near-future.”

According to RA, Mullenix didn’t provide an official reason for his decision to resign, but he said in a statement that he was “grateful for the opportunity to have served the Reston community and to have worked alongside the Board and RA staff.”

In the wake of the resignation, RA is now accepting applications from members interested in filling the vacant at-large director seat until the next board election in April 2027.

The application can be found online or in person at RA’s headquarters at 12001 Sunrise Valley Drive. The association will accept nominations until noon on Friday, Nov. 6, after which the board will appoint a new director to be seated at its Nov. 12 meeting.

The seat will then go on the ballot next spring, and the winner of that election will serve the remainder of Mullenix’s term, which is set to expire in April 2028.

RA’s nine-member board consists of four at-large directors, four representatives of Reston’s main residential districts (Hunters Woods/Dogwood, Lake Anne/Tall Oaks, North Point and South Lakes) and one apartment owners’ representative. Aside from the apartment owners’ representative, all directors serve three-year, staggered terms.
