Upscale Maryland restaurant taps McLean for first N. Va. location

A Maryland restaurant that specializes in sushi as well as steak, burgers and other American fare is coming to McLean.

Glenwood’s has signed a lease to open an approximately 7,000-square-foot restaurant at Chesterbrook Shopping Center, its first location in Northern Virginia, property owner Federal Realty announced today (Wednesday).

“Since acquiring Chesterbrook five years ago, it has been incredibly rewarding to see our vision for the center come to life,” Federal Realty Senior Vice President of Asset Management Mike Ennes said in a press release. “Glenwood’s decision to open its first Virginia location at Chesterbrook is a tremendous testament to the center’s evolution and enduring appeal.”

Originally known as Stanford Grill and Stanford Kitchen prior to a rebranding in 2024, Glenwood’s was developed by Blueridge Restaurant Group, which also operates the Maryland-based chain Copper Canyon Grill.

Stanford Grill made its debut in May 2010 in Columbia, Maryland, serving rotisserie chicken, hardwood-grilled steaks and whole fish, among other “elevated” American dishes initially cooked by executive chef Anthony Peake from McCormick & Schmick’s, the Baltimore Sun reported at the time.

The concept later expanded in 2015 to Rockville, where it introduced sushi to its menu and added an open-air bakery, and in May 2018 to Owings Mills under the name Stanford Kitchen.

All three locations were renamed Glenwood’s — a nod to the town of Glenwood in the restaurant’s original Howard County home — as Blueridge sought to expand first throughout the region, and then, eventually, nationwide.

Representing the first step in that expansion push, Glenwood’s in McLean will accommodate approximately 170 patrons and bring 90 full and part-time jobs.

Located at the southern end of Chesterbrook near Small Door Veterinary, the restaurant will offer nightly live entertainment, an outdoor patio, valet parking, and a private dining room with a “temperature-controlled, floor-to-ceiling wine display,” according to the press release.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 ahead of a targeted fall 2027 opening.

“We’ve spent years building Glenwood’s into a trusted regional dining brand known for exceptional hospitality and consistently high-quality experiences,” Blueridge Restaurant Group Managing Member David Jones said. “McLean is an important next step for us. It is a community that values quality, hospitality, and great restaurants, and Chesterbrook provides an exceptional setting to introduce Glenwood’s to Northern Virginia.”

Glenwood’s will be the latest addition to Chesterbrook Shopping Center, which has undergone significant turnover in its retail offerings and an $8.5 million renovation since Federal Realty acquired it in 2021.

The shopping center has welcomed new restaurants and shops like Sweetgreen, Sorn Thai and Sassanova, while bidding farewell to older businesses like the Chesterbrook Barber Shop, which was able to relocate just next door to 6262-F Old Dominion Drive.

The beach-themed Mexican restaurant Surfside is still in the works at 6218 Old Dominion Drive, where it will be paired in a freestanding building with Sweetgreen. After previously anticipating a summer opening, Federal Realty didn’t have an updated timeline to share by press time.
