A Herndon man has been charged in connection with a shooting that injured an acquaintance and a bystander at the Dulles Greene apartment complex last night (Monday).

Olmer Danilo Perez Villegas, 32, turned himself in this morning (Tuesday) after the Fairfax County Police Department identified him as the suspect in the shooting, which was allegedly sparked by an argument with one of the victims.

According to the FCPD, Perez Villegas was engaged in a verbal argument with another man outside an apartment in the 2200 block of Astoria Circle in the Hutchison area just west of the Town of Herndon.

“During the argument, Perez Villegas fired multiple rounds, striking the victim. A second victim, who was sitting inside his vehicle nearby, was also struck by gunfire,” the FCPD said.

Officers responded to the reported shooting at 7:30 p.m. By the time they arrived at the scene, Perez Villegas had fled, but the officers came across one adult man with a gunshot wound to his upper body and a second man who had been shot in his lower body, the police department said.

Both men were transported to a hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

By 8:36 p.m. yesterday, the FCPD shared on social media that a suspect had been identified and confirmed to be known to one of the victims. This morning, the department announced that the suspect had turned himself in at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

In an update announcing the charges against Perez Villegas this afternoon, police described the incident as a “domestic-related shooting,” but didn’t specify the exact nature of his relationship with the one victim.

Perez Villegas has been charged with two counts of malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He remains in custody at the county jail without bond, the FCPD said.

Malicious wounding is either a class 3 or class 6 felony in Virginia, depending on whether there was an intent to “maim, disfigure, disable, or kill.” Conviction of a class 3 felony could result in five to 20 years of prison time, while the sentence for a lesser class 6 felony is one to five years.

“Victim specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure the victims are receiving appropriate resources and assistance,” the FCPD said.
