(Updated at 11 a.m. on 7/19/2023) A driver died Monday night after a two-vehicle crash on Jeff Todd Way in Fort Belvoir.

Fairfax County police officers were dispatched to the Telegraph Road intersection around 10:51 p.m., followed promptly by emergency medics from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.

“An accident with entrapment…for a vehicle flipped over,” the police dispatcher said. “We got a call saying it was on fire, people screaming for help.”

The crash left one person trapped in their vehicle and another person outside a vehicle with an “obviously broken arm,” a responder who took command of the scene for the fire department reported at 10:57 p.m.

Both drivers were “briefly trapped” after the crash and had to be extricated from their vehicles, the Fairfax County Police Department says. They were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where 27-year-old Mahdere Fassil was pronounced dead.

Southbound Jeff Todd Way was closed to traffic until around 3:20 a.m. as officers cleared and investigated the scene.

A preliminary investigation suggests Fassil was driving a Cadillac XTS west in the eastbound lanes of Jeff Todd Way, nearly hitting two other vehicles before he crashed head-on into a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder, according to an FCPD report released today (Wednesday).

The Nissan driver also suffered “serious injuries” but is now in stable condition and remains hospitalized, police said.

“Detectives continue to investigate whether speed and or alcohol were factors in the crash,” the FCPD said.

We’re about a month out from summer. That means you’ve still got time for spring cleaning!

Lexi Grant, an operations manager at Well-Paid Maids, shared her go-to spring cleaning tips with WTOP News. Step one? Declutter. Get rid of items you don’t use, find space for items that need a home and organize those areas.

Then, it’s time to dust. Lexi starts with high-touch surface areas (think: refrigerator, dishwasher, counters, microwave). One area she sees often neglected is the bedroom — and it makes sense. Heavy furniture is difficult to move around, but it’s important to really get in there so dust doesn’t affect your sleep.
