Reston Association plans to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Reston’s founding with a community pool party and cookout later this month.
The event, free for all RA members and recreation pass holders, is set for 4 p.m. July 20 at the Lake Newport Pool and Recreation Area (11601 Lake Newport Road).
“We are so excited to bring this new event to our community and have everyone come together to celebrate,” RA CEO Mac Cummins said in a release. “Restonians have often told us that our pools are some of the amenities they value the most, and so we thought it only fitting to mark this anniversary with a big community pool party.”
Though Reston wasn’t officially dedicated until Dec. 4, 1965, the community founded by real estate developer Robert E. Simon welcomed its first residents at the new Lake Anne Village Center in December 1964, according to the Reston Museum.
Reston celebrated the anniversary of Simon’s birthday earlier this year with its annual Founder’s Day.
According to Reston Association’s release, the 60th anniversary celebration will include music, a cookout with complimentary food and non-alcoholic drinks, pool games, raffle prizes and music from a local DJ.
Residents are also encouraged to share their memories and photos from 60 years of Reston on a large “memory wall” that aims to evoke shared stories and experiences in the community over the years.
RA also held its first-ever end-of-summer cookout at Lake Newport pool last August. The upcoming celebration will be an even bigger event, says communications director Cara O’Donnell.
Admission for non-members or non-pass holders is $20 for children and $30 for adults.
