A pedestrian died after being hit by the driver of a minivan on I-95 this morning (Thursday), the Virginia State Police says.
The crash occurred around 3:55 a.m. in the highway’s southbound lanes at the Old Keene Mill Road interchange, according to police.
“A minivan, traveling southbound in the right lane of Interstate 95 southbound, was unable to avoid a pedestrian who was also in the right travel lane,” the VSP said. “The pedestrian died at the scene.”
Units from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, including a medic, were dispatched to the scene at 4 a.m., according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.
“We’ve got one male DOA,” a responder reported at 4:06 a.m.
A dispatcher for the state police relayed earlier that callers had “advised he’s walking in the lanes,” per the scanner. The minivan remained at the scene after the crash, a VSP spokesperson confirmed.
Two right lanes on I-95 South were closed near Franconia-Springfield Parkway starting around 4:30 a.m., backing up traffic to the Springfield Mixing Bowl where I-95 meets I-495 and I-395, the Virginia Department of Transportation said on Twitter. All lanes reopened by 7:45 a.m.
“The crash remains under investigation,” state police said.
