Lorton driver charged after tractor trailer crash shuts down highway

A truck driver from Lorton has been charged with reckless driving in the wake of a crash that has blocked I-64 in Henrico County all day.

According to the Virginia State Police, the driver was going west in a tractor trailer on I-64 when the truck’s raised bed struck an overhead traffic sign around 9:36 a.m.

“The bed then separated from the cab of the truck and remained upright against the damaged sign,” the VSP said in a news release. “The bed was removed from against the sign at approximately 11:00 a.m.”

Traffic camera video captured by public safety watcher Dave Statter shows the truck driving with its apparently empty cargo bed raised at an incline. The truck bed can then be seen standing nearly vertical against the overhead sign, which has been bent in half with its support structure collapsing.

As of press time, westbound I-64 remained completely closed at I-295, creating approximately 6-mile-long traffic backups. Drivers are being diverted off the highway at Exit 205 into Quinton, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s traffic camera system.

The VSP has identified the driver as a 62-year-old man from Lorton. No injuries were reported.

“The crash remains under investigation,” the state police said.
