A Fredericksburg man was arrested and charged last week in connection with sexual assaults that allegedly occurred over 40 years ago at a horse farm in Great Falls.

Edward Shelton, 81, turned himself in to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday, Sept. 19, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The arrest comes after a woman reported on June 7 that she had been sexually assaulted multiple times by a man between 1980 and 1983 on a farm in Great Falls, the FCPD said in a press release on Friday (Sept. 20).

Police say they identified Shelton as a suspect because he “worked as a horse farrier on several horse farms throughout Northern Virginia and Stafford at the time. Detectives obtained warrants for two counts of indecent liberties, which involves the sexual assault of a child under 15 and has no statute of limitations in Virginia.

“Upon completion of legal process, [Shelton] will be transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center,” the FCPD said in the press release. “He is being held on no bond.”

The department says anyone who may be another victim or have additional information about the case can contact its Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 4. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Fairfax Crime Solvers online or by phone (1-866-411-TIPS).
