Reston’s Hunters Woods ballfield was officially rededicated as a park on Friday (Oct. 4).
Reston Association marked the underutilized baseball diamond’s transformation into a community park with staff, residents and county officials. The association completed the project in November 2023.
At an unveiling of the new area, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn lauded RA for their work on the project.
“This doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of work…and the result is wonderful,” Alcorn said at the event.
A plan to repurpose the ballfield was approved in 2020 after residents noted that the facility’s lack of parking and location near Breton Court behind the Hunters Woods Village Center limited its accessibility and ability to accommodate larger groups.
Featuring pathways, native plants, outdoor furniture and a Little Free Library, the park was designed to serve pedestrians and the immediate neighborhood.
According to Julie Doherty, president of the Hunters Woods Condo Association, utilization of the area has already gone up.
“We see more people here in one day than we had seen in years,” she said. “We have people walking dogs, doing tai chi. It’s just fantastic.”
RA staff are compiling about 20 suggestions submitted during the rededication ceremony for a new name to represent the revamped area. The name will be announced over the next several weeks, according to RA spokesperson Cara O’Donnell.
