McLean High inducts six new members into Sports Hall of Fame

McLean High School held its 2024 Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony last week, announcing six new inductees during halftime of the Nov. 8 home football game against the Langley Saxons.

The new McLean members are David Daido, Susan South, Alexander Weatherbee, Donald Weatherbee, Ayanna Alexander and Sam Clark.

Daido was a 1981 McLean graduate and was a standout linebacker in football. He led the 1980 Highlanders to a 10-0 record and their first region-playoff berth. He was an all-state selection for his play, as well as chosen all-region and all-district. Daido played football at Western Kentucky University, where he earned All-Ohio Valley Conference.

South was a 1989 graduate and a girls basketball standout for McLean, earning first-team all-district and all-region honors. She played in college at George Mason University. South also played field hockey and softball for McLean. She currently is a girls head high-school basketball coach in Wyoming.

The late Alexander Wetherbee was a 1995 McLean graduate. He was a boys lacrosse standout and team captain at McLean. A Marine first lieutenant, Weatherbee was was killed in action in Iraq in 2004; his father accepted the award. McLean High School also has a lacrosse leadership award named in his honor.

Donald Wetherbee in a 1993 McLean graduate. He had one of the most dominant and accomplished boys lacrosse careers in the history of McLean. He was the first-ever lacrosse All-American in the history of the school. Wetherbee was chosen all-state and first-team all-district and all-region. He is a U.S. Naval Academy alumnus and served 30 years in Naval Special Warfare.

Alexander is a 2000 McLean graduate and one of the most decorated track-and-field athletes in school history. She owns five school records, including indoor and outdoor triple jump, outdoor 300 hurdles, 400 meters and 4×100 meter relay. Alexander also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics for her homeland of Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, she competed in competitions such as the Pan American Games and the Commonwealth Games, and starred at Louisiana Tech University.

Clark graduated from McLean in 1969. He was a dominant lineman in football on both sides of the ball. He was a team captain and an all-district, all-region and all-state selection. Clark played collegiately at The Citadel and Clemson University.
