A man was arrested last week after allegedly fleeing a crash in Vienna that left a pedestrian with serious injuries on Thanksgiving.

The pedestrian had gotten dropped off by a Lyft driver in the 900 block of Park Street SE around 8:15 p.m. on Nov. 28 and was crossing the street when a vehicle in the residential street’s northbound lane hit him, according to the Town of Vienna Police Department.

“The driver of the striking vehicle immediately fled the scene without stopping to provide aid to the injured pedestrian,” the VPD said in its most recent weekly recap.

According to police, the pedestrian was taken to a hospital with injuries that were initially believed to be life-threatening. While his condition improved, he still “suffered multiple severe injuries.”

According to a Dec. 18 news release, detectives found evidence at the scene that indicated the striking vehicle was a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, and they were able to trace it to an address in New Kent County on Nov. 30.

“They located the vehicle, showing damage consistent with the hit-and-run crash,” the VPD said. “The truck was seized, and a search warrant was executed, uncovering additional evidence.”

The driver, identified by police as Chad Gaskill, turned himself in at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Charged with a felony hit-and-run, he was held in custody on a $10,000 secured bond, police said.

Teens vs. security guard assault at fire station

Vienna police officers also responded recently to a pair of public altercations, according to the department’s “highlights” for the week of Dec. 6-12.

First, officers were dispatched to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department (400 Center Street South) at 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 7 after a security guard reported that four teens “began causing a problem” during an event in the station’s banquet hall.

“The host requested the security guards remove them from the premises,” the VPD said. “Two of the teens got into an altercation with one of the guards. The guard attempted to use his pepper spray which caused the teens to run off. The four teens left the area in a vehicle, driving recklessly.”

According to police, officers later managed to locate and speak to two of the teens. After the security guard decided not to pursue charges, they “were advised to stay away from the premises.”

Traffic dispute leads to fight outside 7-Eleven

In a separate incident, a 61-year-old Vienna man was arrested and charged with assault last week after allegedly fighting with a woman in a 7-Eleven parking lot.

Officers responded at 3:14 p.m. on Dec. 10 for a report of a fight at 427 Maple Avenue East, the VPD said. The fight reportedly occurred after a “traffic incident” on Maple Avenue.

From the weekly report:

One of the drivers, a woman, pulled into the parking lot. The other driver, a man with another man in his vehicle, followed her into the lot and an argument ensued. The woman attempted to get back into her vehicle when the other driver forcefully shut the door and began assaulting her.

PFC Mayar arrested the 61-year-old man from Irvin Street in Vienna. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Assault.
