A company that provides athletic and strength training is planning to open a studio at Reston Station once the weather heats up.

Healthy Baller, which already has a location on Inova Health Systems’ campus in Merrifield, has signed a lease for 4,700 square feet of retail space in the office building at 11400 Commerce Park Drive, property owner Comstock Companies announced late last week.

Expected to open this coming spring, it will be Healthy Baller’s fifth location, joining sites in Merrifield, Alexandria, Rockville and D.C.’s Glover Park neighborhood.

“Our spacious new facility will offer performance training, physical therapy, personal training, team training, and more,” Healthy Baller co-owner Matt Boyd said in a press release. “This prime, accessible location will allow us to better serve both Reston and the greater Fairfax/Loudoun areas, and we are thrilled to be welcomed into the Comstock family!”

Boyd co-founded Healthy Baller in 2014 with his former trainer and mentor Blair O’Donovan, who gained prominence as the head strength and conditioning coach for Gonzaga High School’s basketball program. After initially working together out of a Rockville gym, they opened their own facility in 2015, according to the company’s website.

The business expanded to Merrifield in 2022, operating out of Inova Sports Medicine’s facility at the Center for Personalized Health. There, coaches offer performance, personal and team training, but it doesn’t have physical therapy, which is currently only available at the Alexandria and Rockville locations.

The press release didn’t specify which services will be available at the Reston facility, but it says Healthy Baller generally aims to provide a “holistic approach to athletic development” that includes strength and conditioning as well as injury recovery programs.

“It’s great to welcome the next Healthy Baller location to Reston Station,” Comstock Chief Operating Officer Tim Steffan said. “They are a best-in-class provider that will benefit both aspiring local athletes as well as the broader neighborhood with their wellness and recovery services. It will remain our mission to create a diverse, vibrant, active environment for everyone who lives, works, or visits Reston Station.”

The office building where Healthy Baller will be located is in Reston Station’s Commerce District, which encompasses what’s currently an office park south of the Dulles Toll Road and the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station. Future plans for the district call for more office space, multi-family housing and an extended-stay hotel.

Comstock is ensnared in an ongoing legal battle over 11400 Commerce Park Drive. After the developer sued the design and engineering consultant Kimley-Horn in October over alleged unpaid rent, the tenant hit back with a countersuit alleging that toxic gases had forced it to move its employees out of the building.

Comstock disputed Kimley-Horn’s claims, stating that it has been regularly performing indoor air quality tests “to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for all occupants and visitors.”

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, according to court records.
