Police are investigating a shooting in the area near the Worldgate Shopping Center in Herndon.
Officers with the Town of Herndon and Fairfax County police departments were dispatched to the 2100 block of Centreville Road around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 29), though there was some confusion about where exactly the reported shooting occurred.
While the initial 911 call came from the Taco Bell at 2170 Centreville Road, police believe the actual shooting occurred on the other side of the intersection in the 13000 block of Worldgate Drive, Herndon Police Department spokesperson Lisa Herndon says.
“We responded as mutual aid to assist [the Fairfax County Police Department] and then after further investigation and talking to witnesses and the victim, it was established that the incident actually occurred in the town of Herndon,” she told FFXnow.
The victim, an adult man, was transported to Reston Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, the HPD said in a tweet just before 4 p.m.
One person was taken into custody by Herndon police officers at the entrance to the Innovation Center Metro Station and is “being questioned at this time,” Herndon said. The person was not believed to be the shooter.
In an afternoon update on Thursday (Jan. 30), the HPD announced that a 15-year-old boy from Herndon was arrested this morning in connection with the shooting. Now in custody at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center, he has been charged with malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting into an occupied vehicle and willfully shooting a gun in public.
“Great job to the detectives and officers who worked overnight to bring this case to a swift conclusion,” Herndon police said.
