Bed Bath and Beyond is returning to Fairfax County, but not as a standalone retailer.
Instead, the home decor chain’s products will become available through local Container Stores as part of a nationwide “mashup” following a merger between the two companies.
Since last Friday (April 24), all 98 of The Container Store’s locations across the U.S. — including in Tysons (8459 Leesburg Pike), Reston (1851 Fountain Drive) and Springfield (6412 Springfield Plaza) — have been offering 30% off almost all items. Bed Bath and Beyond also has a coupon for 20% off a single item that can be activated either in person or online.
The “Store Changing” sale is intended to clear inventory and make room for the new Bed Bath and Beyond merchandise. Over 1,400 items need to be sold, according to The Container Store’s website and signs posted around the Tysons location.
“This is a reset with purpose,” The Container Store Senior Vice President of Stores Jen Pape said in a press release. “We are actively reshaping our stores to make room for what’s next. By streamlining select categories today, we’re creating the space and flexibility needed to introduce Bed Bath & Beyond products and deliver a more complete home experience for our customers.”
Bed Bath and Beyond acquired the Container Store for $150 million in early April in a bid to broaden its product range after years of cost-cutting efforts and a bankruptcy declaration in 2023.
The home goods chain first shuttered its longstanding Tysons store in February 2022, with its remaining locations in Fairfax County following suit a year later. Only four brick-and-mortar Bed Bath and Beyond sites are now left standing, all of them in the Nashville area.
The Container Store’s transition into a combined business with Bed Bath and Beyond is expected to start in May, though it could take several months to complete.
“The reimagined stores will combine The Container Store’s organizing solutions, in-home services and expertise with an expanded home assortment and complementary offerings from Bed Bath & Beyond,” Bed Bath and Beyond said in its press release.
Meanwhile, Fairfax County’s former Bed Baths have since been replaced by Floor and Decor in Bailey’s Crossroads, Burlington in Mount Vernon, and Bob’s Discount Furniture in Springfield. The Tysons and Fairfax Towne Center storefronts remain vacant, though Fairfax County permit applications suggest the discount grocer Aldi is circling the former.
