Spencer Yates Biles, aged 65, passed away unexpectedly on June 3, 2026 at home in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Spencer began his life journey in Annapolis, Maryland, on March 9, 1961. His Navy family moved a number of times during his youth before eventually settling in Burke, Virginia, where he went to Lake Braddock Secondary School. Spencer then attended Marietta College in Ohio, graduating with a degree in economics, and was a member of the TKE fraternity.

Among the stops growing up, Spencer spent formative years living in Hobcaw (Mt. Pleasant, SC), where his personality blossomed and he began developing and nurturing many of the deep and lasting friendships he maintained throughout his life.

Spencer’s career path reflected his diverse talents. Following college, he went to work for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), serving in corporate finance and anti-fraud analyst roles. He also had an entrepreneurial spirit, leaving the desk life behind to develop his creative flair as the owner of the successful and well-known Creative Cakes in Silver Spring. After selling that business, he transitioned into the tech sector, working as a business development representative for Denodo, a data virtualization firm.

Nostalgic by nature, Spencer cherished the memories, artifacts and subcultures that shaped him. He held a lifelong love for cars from his era—even owning three at once—alongside a deep lifelong love of obscure rock ‘n’ roll music, and was an enthusiastic, early adopter of the DC and wider punk rock scene. He would go through passionate phases in his life, such as his memorable Elvis phase. Accordingly, his home in Silver Spring was a true reflection of his life, beautifully filled with color and many meaningful mementos, items, and pictures that he collected at various points along his rich life journey.

Spencer was best known for his gregarious nature, his giving personality, and an innate desire to foster a sense of community wherever he went. He possessed a great, radiant energy that was always positive and upbeat. With infectious excitement, laughter and a brilliant smile, he greeted everyone he met with a smile and open arms. A natural storyteller, Spencer loved to connect with others, often steering conversations with a laugh saying, “that reminds me of a story.”

He was inquisitive too… prompting one of his relatives to encapsulate his spirit by noting that Spencer was always “one of the most interesting people in the room, and, also one of the most interested people in the room”. His genuine warmth and ability to connect with people left a positive, permanent mark on everyone in his orbit.

Spencer’s greatest legacy lives on through his beloved family. He carried a huge and boundless pride for his daughter, Stella. During Stella’s early years, he was really involved as a dad in her life as an active participant in the PTA, youth sports, School of Rock, and the Girl Scouts. Following a significant car crash years ago, Stella put in an incredible amount of hard work to overcome adversity, culminating in her graduation from nursing school and an impending first job at a hospital in Pittsburgh—an achievement that brought Spencer immense pride and joy.

In addition to Stella, Spencer is survived by his father, George, and his wife, Janet; and his mother, Sloane, and her husband, Bob. Spencer shared a special, deeply unique bond with his brother, George, allowing them to talk almost without words with each other. Spencer really loved his nephew and nieces, Alec, Calle, and Maisie, sharing a special bond with each of them.

He also had a great relationship with his ex-wife, Sharon, and her children Charlotte, Jamie, and Lee, whom he cared for deeply throughout his life. He shared a wonderful relationship with his brother’s wife, Midge, who truly “got him” and all of his endearing quirks. Spencer is also survived by his stepsisters, Linda and her husband, Bob, and Suzie and her husband, Todd, all of whom he was always incredibly excited to see.

Spencer will be deeply missed by his family, his many, many lifelong friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A celebration of life is currently planned to honor Spencer’s vibrant spirit on July 1st, 2026 at the Silver Spring Civic Center (719 Ellsworth Dr, Silver Spring MD 20910) from 5:30-8:30. In lieu of traditional flowers or donations, Spencer would most appreciate being remembered through little, local acts: by pausing to notice the small things in life, and by actively developing, caring for and nurturing both the people around you and the spaces you live in. And, above all, stay in touch with family and friends … and call someone special today!

The following memorial event is planned.
