‘America at 250’ art exhibition in McLean highlights works by 45 local artists

There’s bad news and good news for anyone who wants to celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial this weekend.

While soaring temperatures will create dangerous conditions during daytime hours Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, an indoor option for commemorating the occasion is available, courtesy of the McLean Art Society.

The nonprofit is hosting an “America at 250” exhibition featuring 180 works by 45 local artists at the McLean Art Gallery in Chesterbrook Shopping Center (6224 Old Dominion Drive).

According to an online description of the event:

“America at 250 invites artists to reflect on the American experience, its history, landscapes, people, ideals, and evolving stories, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Through diverse artistic perspectives, this exhibition explores what America has been, what it is today, and what it may become.

“Alongside this special exhibition, the gallery will feature many original works by local artists exploring a wide variety of themes and subjects. Visitors can enjoy artwork in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and mixed media, as well as drawing, photography, sculpture, and works in wood, glass, ceramics, and jewelry.”

A free opening reception with live music, wine, and other refreshments will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Friday; free tickets can be reserved online.

The pop-up gallery is open noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, including the Independence Day holiday weekend. And there’s one more piece of good news for those interested, yet still set on braving the summer heat elsewhere this weekend: the exhibition runs until Aug.t 1.
